20th Anniversary

2003 and 2004 mark the 20th Anniversary of the foundation of the Harambee Education Fund.

HARAMBEE is the Kiswahili word for ‘working together for the common good’, or ‘Meitheal’ in Irish.

And it was on this fundamental principle that the Harambee project was first conceived in 2004.

Harambee is an initiative of students and staff at TUDublin, Tallaght campus, (formerly the Institute of Technology Tallaght).

Working in partnership with a dedicated team of volunteers in Mukuru - teachers and social workers in local primary schools - the Fund provides secondary education scholarships for children living in the Mukuru slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

The children of Mukuru are bright and intelligent and filled with all the hopes and dreams of children worldwide. Yet, because school fees are beyond the means of most families in the slums, few of these children can ever hope to achieve their dream of continuing their education beyond primary school.

With your support, Harambee can offer these children the chance to fulfil their dreams and ambitions, helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

HARAMBEE is an entirely volunteer-run project, with no salaried staff or costly administration or publicity outlay. This means that every Euro raised will go directly to providing education scholarships for the children.
